Express Your Personal Brand Through the Power of Podcasting

Neville Hobson

with Neville Hobson

Some say it’s a revolution that will change broadcasting and people’s listening habits for ever. Others still say it’s a fad that’s of limited appeal and use beyond geeks and enthusiasts.

Whatever anyone says, you’d have to admit that something that rocketed out of nowhere in 2004 and today has got individuals and big companies alike actively using it must be worth taking a look at to see what you can learn from it.

That ’something’ is podcasting.

Drawing upon tips and tricks in How to Do Everything with Podcasting, the book by Shel Holtz with Neville Hobson from McGraw-Hill published in June 2007, Neville Hobson will show you how a podcast can be a key element in your own brand-building strategy that can enable you to extend your connections and add to your personal credibility.

Using the example of For Immediate Release: The Hobson and Holtz Report, the business podcast he has presented twice-weekly with Shel Holtz since January 2005, Neville will explain how to build a genuine community centered around your brand to enhance your personal reputation online.

Neville Hobson, ABC, is an accredited communication practitioner with over 25 years' experience and a passion for using new and emerging technology tools and channels to achieve business goals by better aligning organizational needs with the marketplace and the needs of employees, customers, and other stakeholders.

As a communicator, blogger, and podcaster, he is one Europe’s leading early adopters and influencers in social media communication for business and helps organizations understand and leverage the business benefits and cultural impacts of blogs, podcasts, and other social media. He engages with companies, journalists, industry analysts, and business bloggers throughout Europe, North America, and Asia to continuously research emerging communication technologies.

Neville is a Senior Research Fellow and Advisory Board member for the Society for New Communication Research in California. He is an active member of IABC. Neville blogs at www.NevilleHobson.com.

Debbie Weilwith Debbie Weil

If you've read the other session descriptions - and you haven't been hiding under a rock for the past 18 months or so - then you know that blogging is an effective way to market and brand yourself as an expert and a thought leader. With a smart, well-written blog, of course.

In this session Debbie will dispense specific tips and tricks for writing a great blog and for soliciting feedback and comments from your readers: how often to blog (not as often as you might think); how to write effective (i.e. Google-friendly) titles for your entries; how to select topics to write about; what you should NOT blog about; why you should add videos (and how easy it is to do); why inserting links into every blog post is essential (links are the currency of the blogosphere); advanced linking tricks, and more. Jazz Up Your Personal Brand for Business Success

Marc Gobéa brandjamming session with Marc Gobé

Branding is about expressing your own distinct personality in order to stand out and be preferred by a customer. Branding has now extended to become a personal strategy for public figures. We remember celebrities because of their unique image (personal brand). And nobody can forget the faces of Einstein or Che Guevara, having become themes for T-shirts and other commodities.

A unique personal brand image has helped them communicate a bigger message to the world, because people remember and process images better than words. Images are the bridge that helps us understand more profound messages behind a particular brand. Individually, how we get a job or promotion, win business, find a mate, or convey a message is based on how well we can express our strong points and hidden talents in a memorable way.

Some people do this through dress, such as Wall Street businessmen in power suits. Artists adopt a different dress code or speaking style to differentiate themselves as creative people. Great brands like Coca-Cola and Apple spend a lot of money on their visual appeal and design to inspire people with the greater message they want to deliver. As people, we can adopt those same rules to get ahead through personal branding.

Using jazz as metaphor, Marc discusses the creative process that can lead to unusual solutions that make people gravitate toward a personal brand.

Marc Gobé is part aesthete, part visionary, part anthropologist. 100% passionate, he is a “conceptual provocateur,” always seeking ways to challenge the norm from a totally different perspective. Marc is the visionary behind some of the most powerful brands and breakthrough concepts of the past few decades, as well as the author of such innovative books as Emotional Branding and Brandjam.

Marc has developed a profound, humorous, and honest “street wisdom,” with conceptual leaps informed by his love of art, culture, and, people; an insatiable curiosity about what makes people tick; an innate business sense; and unique vision as a designer.

A true New Yorker (tireless and, of course, from somewhere else!), Marc has lived in the US for 20 years and is a naturalized American citizen. He remains in touch with his roots -- a lovely, sleepy maritime village in France, has a boundless love for travel and exploring world cultures, and is committed to being a “citizen of the world” in his heart.
